On Saturday, July 14, I went to Longwood Elementary School with Katie Huynh in Hayward, CA to help hold the 5K race during the school’s Olympics Family Day.
The 5K was part of the Shoes That Inspire program, in which we help various schools start running programs that end with a 5K. The race is especially rewarding to the participants because prior to the race’s start, they receive a pair of Asics running shoes and after they finish, they get a medal.
I arrived early in the morning to help with setting up the race and basic logistics. Katie came later and also helped with other organizational matters and with passing out medals. However, the most important part of the day was watching the kids run happily around the field; they were extremely excited to try out their new shoes and get through the finish line!
I was happy that I got to help further HLFY’s mission of promoting activity and health through exercise, and I hope to continue doing so in the future.
